Lakers training camp day one roundup

What started as a normal Tuesday has turned into massive sweeping changes for the Lakers. It all started Tuesday morning with the announcement that Jeanie Buss had fired GM Mitch Kupchak and demoted brother Jim Buss to strictly an ownership role. Things have moved very quickly.

Rob Pelinka has swiftly moved into position to be the next GM of the Lakers. If that name sounds familiar, he is the agent for former superstar Kobe Bryant. He is also the agent for an assortment of current NBA talent.

It seems that this is a hire to mirror the hire that took place in Golden State with GM Bob Myers. Myers was also a former player agent and he has certainly turned things around in Golden State. So far there has been much optimism from around the league include the master Woj bomber himself Adrian Wojnarowski.

It seems that Ryan West, son of Laker great Jerry West, survived the onslaught of firings today that included longtime PR man John Black.

Not your dad’s hire

One thing can be said about this is that it is out of the box. Though you can’t say that this is an “Outside the family” hire because Pelinka has been involved with the Lakers for a very long time, players around the league are very optimistic about Pelinka, who has been stated to be a solid basketball mind and great with players. His reputation precedes him as someone who is very well educated with talent and as seen by his representations. He knows how to pick them.

Personally I’m warming up to this hire the more and more I look into him. Seems like he will turn the supposed reputation around that the Lakers front office is out of touch with players. This purge has been tough on me because I still had the utmost faith in Jim and Mitch. That said I’m willing to see how things go. At least Pelinka looks like Rob Lowe.
