Russell sits as Spurs and Lakers clash at Staples

UTA 102   LAL 100

In a game that was well battled for the Lakers, the team came up short tonight against the Utah Jazz. In the first half, the Lakers looked very composed in the game and were getting solid production from Julius Randle and Thomas Robinson. However, the Lakers couldn’t matchup well with Gordon Hayward. This was also a half to forget for Nick Young, D’Angelo Russell, and Lou Williams as Young shot 1 for 7, Russell 1 for 7, and Williams 0 for 3 to start. The Lakers finished well to end the half and led the Jazz 54-48.

In the second half it was more of the same for Nick Young and D’Angelo Russell as both still continued to struggle, but the team was still getting very good production from Randle. Down the stretch of the 3rd quarter, Lou Williams broke out of his shooting slump and came alive by dropping 16 points in the half, finishing with 22. The game came down to the wire; it was tied 99-99, but a miscommunication error allowed Joe Ingles to spot up open for the corner three. The Lakers almost re-tied the game on a move by Randle where he almost drawn an and-one. Randle made the first, missed the second Lakers down 102-100. Rudy Gobert was immediately fouled by Luol Deng and Luke Walton designed a play for Lou Williams if Gobert made one and missed one. The team was not counting on Gobert missing both free throws, therefore leading to a D’Angelo Russell game winning airball.

Yes, let the hate birds have their shine right now. Let the D’Angelo Russell hate club bask in their moment. Russell airballing a potential game winner does sting but it’s not like we haven’t seen an airball game winning shot against the Jazz by a young player before.
