The Lakers are tied to many big names during free agency this year. First was Hassan Whiteside, then Chandler Parsons, and now Nicolas Batum. He is reported to be “talking with the Lakers” and “mulling over options”.

Batum would be a huge signing for the Lakers, who are in desperate need of any talent that they can afford. Many fans may look down on this signing, as we just drafted our wing of the future in Brandon Ingram. However, Batum and Ingram can potentially play alongside each other under Coach Walton’s system.

Fit for Batum

At only 27 years old, Nicolas is a great fit for the team. He brings in a veteran presence to a young core, while still being young enough to fit into the youth movement. In a great read from At The Hive, they highlighted that Batum assisted on 26.9 percent of his teammates’ points. After watching Byron’s stagnant offense from last season, that statistic has me salivating. He fits incredibly well under the new offensive system that Luke implements.

Another statistic from the At The Hive article showed that in almost every lineup including Batum scored better and more efficiently than lineups not including him. Think about that for a second. This was a Charlotte team that was incredibly fun to watch and made it to the playoffs. Anyone who doesn’t like Batum as a fit for the Lakers hasn’t watched much basketball, or is incredibly dense.

Injury questions

While still being young, Nicolas has had a bit of an injury history. All things considered, the injuries shouldn’t be something to worry about, though. He tends to have quick recovery times, and there haven’t been any major injuries to him that would warrant teams to be afraid of a repeated problem.

With the Lakers, Nicolas just makes sense. On a team with a lot of young, skilled players, adding a player with the ability to help his teammates is essential. Batum might just be the steal of the offseason, even if he receives a max contract. The Lakers should do anything they can to get him on the team.

UPDATE: Nicolas Batum is at the top of the Lakers list

The Lakers can see Batum playing SG and SF
