There have been rumors all summer long that Nick Young was likely going to be waived, stretched, or traded. The estranged guard has spent most of the summer getting involved with bad press. From nearly blowing his hand off on the Fourth of July.
To Iggy Azalea ending their engagement due to her catching Nick Young on camera bringing women into their home, Nick Young has not had a good summer.
After finishing up a Drew League game, something he and other NBA players participate in every summer, Mark Medina of the LA Daily news ran into Nick Young. Nick Young obliged in answering some questions, something he hasn’t done outside of Twitter.
D’Angelo Russell and Snapgate
When the video leaked, it was a major blow to the relationship Nick Young and D’Angelo Russell shared. Before that point, they had been really good friends, and Nick felt betrayed by the 20 year old guard. At the time, D’Angelo Russell stated that he had made efforts to apologize. Nick Young was not very receptive at first, though he dismissed any concerns regarding the two being able to play together.
“We’re teammates. It’s been so long, so it’s kind of old. We’ll be able to work it out. We’ve already been working it out. It is what it is. I can’t be mad forever.”
Young also joked about the commercial D’Angelo starred in for foot locker involving him throwing Ben Simmon’s phone out the window. At first in apparent sarcasm:

A month or so later, Young seems to have found humor in the incident
“I need my commercial now, I’ll explain what happened to my life”
It appears that he has moved on from the incident. However, a lot of Laker fans (including myself) were not pleased with how he handled the incident. Nick Young not speaking with D’Angelo Russell felt petty and very immature for someone in their early thirties.
Luke Walton hire
Nick Young also commented on the hiring of new Lakers coach Luke Walton. He echoed the excitement shown by the young core of the Lakers.
“It’s a breath of fresh air for me. Luke is a big-time coach and came from a championship team. I think I have the tools that we can use as a shooter.”
Nick Young stated that he had spoken to Luke Walton a couple of times and received good vibes from all the conversations.
“I left the conversations feeling good. But at the end of the day, I don’t know. We’ll see. I hear so much. You don’t know what to believe.”
As usual with the Lakers organization, you never really know what is going to happen till it happens. If Young can find that shooting form he had under Mike D’Antoni, he could certainly find a place on this team. Only time will tell if he is going to remain a Laker on opening night. The deadline to stretch him is August 31st. It’s likely we’ll find out sooner than later.
