After 32 seasons as head athletic trainer of the Lakers, Gary Vitti retired at the end of the season. The Lakers didn’t look far to find his replacement in Marco Nunez, who worked under Vitti for the last 9 seasons.
Vitti, who came under some scrutiny the last few seasons with the rash of injuries that plagued the Lakers, is still considered one of the top trainers in the NBA. Nunez will likely follow his same process, but perhaps can infuse some new school training. Nunez won’t have to deal with an aging roster, but will have to help the Lakers youth transition to the rigors of the NBA.
This move won’t be noticed much by fans, but is important no doubt. The Lakers have had a changing of the guard in nearly every aspect of their franchise.
