CHANGES GALORE FOR LA
We now have some insight into the new front office changes. According to Eric Pincus, the Lakers are beginning to restructure the franchise.
The Lakers hired Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka to change the fortunes of a team that has been lottery bound for 4 seasons in a row. They will set up the philosophy of a multiple tiered organization using 4 categories. This will consist of: college scouting, international scouting, NBA scouting, and scouting for the G-League’s South Bay Lakers
Friend of Jim Buss is let go
According to Mike Medina of the LA Daily News, Lakers scout Chaz Osborne is another casualty of the Lakers with what a Lakers spokesperson said is “part of the reorganization of basketball operations.” The Lakers parted ways with Osborne earlier this month. In an article from 2012, Tony Manfred cites Ken Berger from CBS sports who said Osborne was a longtime friend of former Lakers executive vice president of basketball operations Jim Buss. The Buss and Chaz connect dates back to their days in the horse racing business, while Chaz had also been a bartender for Jim. Jim made him a “scout,” with this title, Chaz gained hilarious internet notoriety. Jim was fired in February by his sister, Lakers governor Jeanie Buss.
Very little change for successful scouting department
In the college scouting department, consistent drafting of the last several picks, including Brandon Ingram and D’Angelo Russell, means that there will be no changes by management. Internationally the Lakers have one scout, Antonio Maceiras. Antonio Maceiras was credited by Mitch Kupchak as the scout that gave the team the name of Ivica Zubac.
Ryan West, who is Director of Player Personnel, will have a few new scouts to help him in this department to study current NBA Players. Ryan will follow the NBA and college scouting as well.
The Lakers will add one or two scouts who will focus on potential call-ups from the G-League. The new scout(s) will deal with two-way contracts, training camp, and summer league invitations.
The analytics department will thankfully be increased under the new regime. Magic Johnson has said analytics should play a part in the scouting process, which is exciting news. Up until now, the analytics department has not been used to their full potential.
The G-Leagues newly named South Bay Lakers will remain the same with President and CEO Joey Buss. General Manager Nick Mazzella will remain in his Front Office position.
It is one week away from the Draft Lottery, but the Lakers only hold a 46.9 percent chance of keeping their top 3 protected pick. These positions are sure to be instrumental in aiding this process of development. As a Lakers fan, I am hoping this pick is a well thought out decision. Magic Johnson will be there attending the lottery, so let’s hope the magic isn’t just in his name.
