UPDATE: Done deal. Jose is a Laker no longer.

UPDATE: The Warriors have emerged as the team Jose is expected to sign with, per Marc Stein and Anthony Slater.

Last summer the Lakers had an insane amount of cap space. They used some that money to take on Jose Calderon’s contract from the Bulls. They also received 2 2nd round picks, while giving up nearly nothing. It was a clever move. They get assets for taking on an expiring contract. At the time, and really until Thursday I was hoping Jose could net us another 2nd rounder, but with his 7 million dollar contract, that was never realistic. But now according to Marc Stein, the Spanish point guard still will not be a Laker for long.

It’s important to note the word usage here. “Exploring” makes it sound as if nothing is imminent. Still buyouts don’t usually take long.

From the Lakers perspective, they may want to clear a roster spot for a young player that is unsigned. Cough* Gary Payton Jr. Cough* Or they may just want to save money. It will be clear enough soon.

Calderon is 35 years old. He wants a ring. He likely goes to a contender in need of depth in the backcourt. Like…

The buyout, if it happens, makes sense for both sides and is expected. Hopefully LA uses the roster spot and the player coming in can workout well.
