The Lakers continued their NBA combine interviews today, which has already included potential number one pick Markelle Fultz. This time around, they added former Indiana star forward OG Anunoby to their list.

The 6’8 forward was a break out freshman in 2016, especially in the NCAA tournament when he shut down eventual top ten pick Jamal Murray in their matchup in the round of 32. Though his sophomore year got off to a great start, it was derailed by a torn ACL in January which resulted in season ending surgery.

In recent mock drafts courtesy of Draft Express, he doesn’t drop below 15 and for good reason. Anunoby is touted as an athletic forward that can guard 1-4 (though he is claiming 1-5). At 6’8 in shoes, he can easily slide into the 4 spot in small ball lineups and with a 7’2 wingspan, his belief that he can guard some 5s may be warranted.

At this point, it seems unlikely that Anunoby falls to the 28th spot. He is certainly not a top five pick. Whether this is a precursor to a possible trade to move their second first round pick remains to be seen. This is probably just due diligence, which is the way it should be for a team that is trying to get the best possible value out of their picks. If the Lakers are fortunate enough to see Anunoby drop to them, it will be a no-brainer of a pick. It’s likely he would’ve been a top ten pick if not for his ACL tear in the middle of the year. The 6’8 forward would be a steal if the Lakers grabbed him outside of the top fifteen. For a full profile of him, please see Draft Express’s breakdown.
