The Lakers hosted Dennis Smith Jr for a workout and it was in a group setting with more then one player being worked out. This allowed for Smith to show his abilities not only as an individual, but also as a teammate. It was in this workout that it is reported that Dennis Smith posted a 48 inch vertical according to Mark Medina of the Orange County Register.
It appears that Smith did good enough to turn the right heads of the Lakers front office as they were reported to be very impressed. Smith did awesome in the workout as a source tells Adam Zagoria of Zagsblog:
The Lakers were “very impressed” with N.C. State point guard Dennis Smith Jr. during his workout Sunday, a source told ZAGSBLOG, and are reportedly “hopeful” of bringing in Washington guard Markelle Fultz this week.
The Lakers pick at No. 2 in the June 22nd NBA Draft and have been linked to several lead guards, including Lonzo Ball, who met with the Lakers last week, De’Aaron Fox, Smith Jr and now Fultz.
“They have some decisions to make,” the source said.
The last quote sounds like the Lakers have opened the door for Dennis Smith to be a candidate for the #2 pick. His workout most have showcased his athleticism and scoring because those are the skills that give Smith such a high ceiling. Lonzo should still be treated as the favorite due to all the reports connecting him to the Lakers.
There is still some kind of uncertainty in the air due to the fact that Lonzo was reported to be “out of shape” according to Mark Medina. Still, if the Lakers are going to draft Smith, it will have to come as a result of a trade down from the #2 spot. He is talented enough to deserve the #2 pick, but they could get even more value by trading down.
