Hasheem Thabeet, the 2nd overall pick of the 2009 NBA draft, held a workout with the Lakers, according to Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders. While the Lakers have become a hub of former lottery picks that did not work out in recent years (Wesley Johnson, Xavier Henry, Kendall Marshall, Ed Davis) it is extremely unlikely Thabeet will be on the Lakers anytime soon.
First off, Yi Jianlian and Thomas Robinson are battling for the last spot on a roster all ready filled with big men. In fact, there is a chance neither make it, with Metta World Peace having yet to be cut. Secondly, it seems unlike for the Lakers to bring in someone who has not been part of training camp in any capacity. Thabeet would not be able to secure a 10-day contract as Luke Walton has already said the Lakers will keep 15 people on the roster. But the Lakers have nothing to lose in working him out, so it is good to see the front office being active. As for Thabeet, he apparently looked good in his workouts, and I am willing to bet a playoff team will pick him up around midseason.
