Unfortunate news for Laker fans was released prior to the matchup Friday night between the San Antonio Spurs and your Lakers. D’Angelo Russell will not be playing tonight.
According to Serena Winters of Lakersnation.com this is not a new issue.
Whether this has been the cause for his semi slow start remains to be seen. It seems to be more serious unfortunately, and Russell will be visiting a doctor later tonight to see if it’s more serious.
It should be concerning considering after his 32-point performance on Tuesday against the Brooklyn Nets. Russell had a two days to rest. As Medina states more will be learned later tonight. We can only cross our fingers in hopes that this is nothing more serious than just soreness.
Who will start
As of now it is unknown who will start in place of Russell. I imagine that Jose Calderon or Marcelo Huertas will get their first starts of the season. This would only be the case if Luke wants to keep the bench unit intact. Luke Walton can also choose to go with Lou Williams or Jordan Clarkson start in Russell’s place. Hopefully with a long and grueling 82 game season this is nothing more than just a precautionary move.
In other news it was reported yesterday that Nick young was held out of practice due to a head cold. According to Luke Walton Nick will be ready to go tonight.
No doubt not having D’Angelo Russell in the game tonight throws a hurdle in an already tough game. The San Antonio Spurs remain one of the best teams in the league. Having one of your best young talents out will make things much harder. Once it’s know if Russell’s knee is more serious we will let you all know.
